The Arts Institute

location: Bournemouth

year: 1999

client: The Bournemouth + Poole College

The influence of new information technology on arts and media education has raised fundamental questions about the types of buildings needed. Likewise the changing curriculum and the way in which students study and work has affected the way they use space, generating a need for much more flexible and multi-use areas.

The institute’s governors commissioned a study that reviewed existing space utilisation and considered the best way to upgrade existing and provide new accommodation. Working with the school, Horden Cherry Lee Architects’ masterplan considers the campus landscape, aiming to create quality spaces between the buildings, separating cars and people. Buildings focus around the heart of the campus, while a sequence of integrated social and educational spaces for student and teacher interaction are formed in a more democratic interaction. The masterplan report was strongly supported by the local authority and a new refectory and student housing have been completed to date.
