'Polar lab' is a temporary Antarctic habitat and research station deployable by helicopter or standard transportation sledges. The basic idea was to design an independently functioning capsule that could be delivered in one drop, and was capable of housing three people for a period of up to three weeks without need for further supplies. ‘Polar lab ‘combines a simple structure and an optimal volume–surface ratio for aerodynamics, energy-efficiency, simple construction and redundancy qualities.
At the same time polar lab is capable of expanding its volume to create optimal research conditions. This is achieved by using the simple geometric form of a regular octahedron which can be expanded with three additional tetrahedrons.
