After spending a lot of time thinking about what we want to see between water and sky we had a close look at the limestone rocks on the island of Purbeck on the English South Coast, a possible site for the floating architecture for the Olympic yacht races in 2012.
The rocks are shaped by the sea into smooth elegant objects during a long process of fluid dynamic erosion. In our concept three lower located floating volumes merge beneath the waterline with the lifted shape providing the main space for the users with a view down to the se as well as to the horizon and sky. People can dock their boats to one of the "islands", whereas the other islands are used for sunbathing or for a bar close to the water. One island can also be used beneath the water which enables a view to the under water world.
The water level in the core part can be changed by air pressure in a way that the users of the architecture can choose how close they want o be to the water. This technique also helps to lift the project in bad weather conditions protecting it against rough sea. It's not a boat and not a building. It is an "in between" (zwischen) object - it's just there to enable people to enjoy the space between water and sky.
