French Mill Lane

location: Shaftesbury, Dorset

year:  2004-2006

client: Private

The client couple who own this classic 1930s house in the famous Dorset town of Shaftesbury have diligently restored it over the last eight years.

A two-storey side extension will dramatically improve the living space for the client’s growing family, while continuing the spirit of experimentation, which produced the style and appearance of the existing house.

The extension features a full-height glazed garden elevation, which improves the outlook of the original house, maximizing the magnificent views of the surrounding countryside. Garden levels to the rear of the house will be raised using terracing to create a more convenient and closer relationship between the house and the garden.

A new bedroom with en-suite bathroom at first floor level is pulled back from this elevation permitting a generous double height volume for the dining room below. Both dining room and bedroom benefit from views through the glazing.

A glazed double height corridor, featuring an internal bridge at first floor level, will connect the new extension to the existing house.
