The Bryanston Music Room is a tiny ‘human scale’ project; an extension to Hunter House for girls at Brysanston Boarding School in Dorset sponsored by a pupil’s family.
The project design is most significant for the way that the building is recessed into the chalk hillside looking out onto its own sheltered courtyard. In Dorset the wind blows very strongly from the west, so the small excavated external space is warm and welcoming in an otherwise bleak landscape. The roof beams and courtyard wall extend into and over the landscape. The roof appears to float creating an ‘in between’ zone of building, earth and sky.
