Overview

HCL architects have received planning consent and the project is now in construction for the redevelopment of the former Grade II listed Whitbread Brewery stables building at Garret St. in the heart of Old Street.

The design proposal is heritage-led and is a sensitive adaptation of a redundant, obsolete building, bring its return to a full and vibrant use. Comprising four floors of workspace with extensions at the courtyard and roof level, the ground floor is animated with café and an intimate landscaped space for its users.

The proposal delivers a wide range of work spaces including a small reception/social meeting space, breakout spaces, bleacher seating and an external courtyard that could be used for public exhibitions and events. The stable plan will be returned to its original open plan form and new elements do not detract from the historic integrity of the original architecture.

The 1897 stables building will become a sustainable work-place through sensitive change, the design of which has been informed throughout by a clear understanding of the heritage significance.
