Overview
This full-scale refurbishment project involved the complete transformation of a private apartment in Kensington, London, carried out for private clients and situated within a conservation area. The works included a comprehensive internal reconfiguration and renewal of all major elements, including new internal walls, ceilings, flooring, and doors, creating a refreshed layout and significantly upgraded finish throughout.
A key element of the project was the introduction of underfloor heating, improving both comfort and spatial cleanliness by removing the need for visible radiators. New flooring was installed across the entire apartment, featuring a continuous herringbone timber floor, which unifies the spaces and provides a timeless foundation to the overall design scheme.
The refurbishment also incorporated the installation of new windows, requiring planning approval due to the conservation area setting. These upgrades significantly improved the property’s U-values and overall energy efficiency, enhancing thermal performance while maintaining architectural sensitivity. A carefully considered combination of Crittall-style glazing and traditional sash windows ensured the apartment retained its heritage character while benefiting from modern detailing.
The interior design concept centred on an elegant balance of modern and traditional influences, blending contemporary refinement with period charm. This contrast is particularly evident in the treatment of the fireplace, where one side was designed with a modern aesthetic, while the other retains the character of an 18th-century fireplace, creating a striking and sophisticated focal point. The detailing continues throughout the home, with bespoke cornicing in each room, tailored individually to reflect the function and mood of the space.
The kitchen was delivered in collaboration with Bulthaup, bringing precision craftsmanship and modern minimalism into the heart of the apartment. Throughout the property, bespoke joinery was designed to meet the client’s needs, providing maximum storage solutions while maintaining clean architectural lines.
Lighting was treated as a layered and flexible element of the scheme, incorporating a mix of decorative lamps, track lighting, reading lights, ceiling lights, and feature fittings. This approach allows for adaptable ambience, supporting both practical living and softer evening settings.
Overall, the project delivers a cohesive and refined home that seamlessly merges heritage and contemporary design, combining craftsmanship, performance upgrades, and tailored detailing into a unified and timeless interior.
